How to clean bathroom tiles?

Soap scum, mildew, and filthy grout – over the years our team at Gold Coast Bathroom Renovation have seen everything in the way of rundown bathrooms and have learned how to clean bathroom tiles in practical ways.

You can purchase commercial products to clean your bathroom tiles, but if you are interested in using less chemicals for your health’s sake and saving money, we suggest that you clean your bathroom tiles naturally.

Two efficient home remedies for cleaning bathroom tiles

Nature gives us a variety of non-toxic cleaners with vinegar and baking soda being two of the most efficient and easily available.

  • Vinegar – Oils, minerals from water, soap residues and humidity-loving mildew collect on bathroom tiles leaving them looking dull and feeling grimy.

Acetic acid, the active ingredient in vinegar, addresses each of these issues. It dissolves the calcium and other minerals left behind by hard water, loosens oil and soap scum and kills mildew.

Tiles with a thin layer of grime can usually be wiped clean with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water. Those with a heavier buildup of dirt and stains benefit from a vinegar soak. Simply apply a generous amount of the vinegar solution to the tiles and allow it to sit for at least half an hour before you begin scrubbing.

One of the downsides to cleaning bathroom tiles with vinegar is the smell. You can easily solve this problem by adding a few drops of an essential oil to your vinegar/water solution. Wild orange, eucalyptus, lemon and lavender essential oils all add a pleasant fragrance, while also boosting the vinegar’s natural antibacterial effect.

  • Baking Soda – Baking soda can work wonders in a grimy bathroom. Its first benefit is that its fine grains create additional friction as we scrub. This added scrubbing power makes it easier to clean grout, as well as to remove stubborn mineral deposits, layers of scum and some stains.

Another benefit of baking soda is that it is alkaline. Acidic vinegar removes some stains, but others are immune to acid. These stains can often be removed or at least lightened by an alkaline cleaner such as baking soda. Rubbing particularly stubborn stains with a baking soda and water paste and allowing it to sit for about an hour before scrubbing can save on elbow grease.

Vinegar and baking soda tile cleaner recipe

The internet is full of tile cleaner recipes, but the following one stands out because it includes both vinegar and baking soda.

In bathrooms with significant stains and grime, cleaning the walls and tile floors with both vinegar and baking soda gives much better results than using just one product or the other.

Tile Cleaner Recipe

Mix or shake the following ingredients:

  • 1 2/3 cups baking soda
  • 1/2 cup Castile or liquid dish soap
  • 2 – 4 tablespoons white vinegar

After mixing the main ingredients dilute it with 1/4 – 1/2 cup water to give it the desired consistency. Store it in an airtight container and use liberally.

We hope that these natural cleaning tips will help you to efficiently clean your bathroom tiles without expending unnecessary time or effort.
